Thinkers, scholars, scientists, philosophers, etc., used to assemble commonplace books around their interests and their fields of study and have them printed up to sell to the public in order that others might benefit from their selections and come to understand a bit more about their respective fields and/or glean wisdom from the sages of the past. The have been termed “printed commonplace books”. Unfortunately the printed commonplace book has fallen out of fashion. This is lamentable! So, I’m bringing them back right here on my Substack!

“Sayings of the Sages” is the digital version of my commonplace book of wisdom. So if you’re interested in gleaning from the wisdom that I’ve gleaned, you’re in the right spot!

You can find the rest of the entries in my subsection here.

But I’m also starting to literally print up my commonplace book of wisdom in my brand new personal magazine called Proverb Peddling. In issue 1, I include a Sayings of the Sages section with about 60 wise sayings from my commonplace book of wisdom. I’ve really excited about this project and I’m going to continue to print these digital entries in future issues of my physical magazine. Check out the physical magazine below:

Issue 1 of Proverb Peddling Zine

These commonplace book entries are for my paid subscribers but I will give my free subs a few of the sententiae to wet your beak and hopefully a few more of you will want to up grade to paid in order to help support my work. Let’s jump in:

Sayings of the Sages - pt. 7

But riches are unable to quench insatiable greed; power does not make a man master of himself if he is imprisoned by the indissoluble chains of wicked lusts; and when high office is bestowed on unworthy men, so far from making them worthy, it only betrays them and reveals their unworthiness.
Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy, Penguin, pg. 39

Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearances but the LORD looks on the heart.
God to Sammuel, 1 Samuel 16:7

Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.
Proverbs 17:9

If the serpent bites before it is charmed, there is no advantage to the charmer.
Ecclesiastes 10:11

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.
Robert E. Howard via Conan in the Tower of the Elephant.
