We had our first Zoom Book Club session to talk about books I-III of Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy last Saturday and it was awesome!

I recorded it for all those paid subscribers who weren’t able to make it but who want to benefit from the discussion. We talked for about 90 minutes about all things book I-III and foreshadowing some of the last two books as well. We discussed some more of Boethius’s influences and I explained some more of my research into Boethius, his life, and his project. He was truly a genius. The essay for Book IV is due today but I’m running a little behind. I’m hoping to have it done late tonight and I’ll probably just share it at like midnight or early tomorrow morning—it’s a really good section, I’m pumped to hear what you think in the comments.

Check the schedule below for the next Book Club zoom call (it’s August 30th) and upgrade to a paid subscription so you can join us. Also, if you upgrade now you can also watch our recording of session 1 below.

I’m pushing the paid subscriptions because I have a bet with my wife and we need 2 more paid subscribers by the end of the day today for her to win the bet so I’m trying to help her out. She gets to determine our next date night if she wins today and gets to picker her own special (what her family calls a special gift from a trip; my family calls it a ‘treat’). So if you’re thinking of upgrading to paid, today would be a great day.

Paid subscribers are also helping me pay for two commissioned Lady Philosophy pieces. The Lady Phil art is way outdated. She is an epic-fantasy-type goddess-esque character. We need updated art that represents her! So I commissioned two of pieces on her: 1 from Angela Ann and 1 from Volodymyr Yanovski. They’re both works in progress but you can see the latest that each have sent me below the paywall.

In addition to access to the Zoom Book Club live and recordings, paid subscribers get access to:

  • full-length notebook philosophy essays/tutorials where I share in-depth instructions on how to use various notebook methods and the philosophers who inspired each method

  • members-only access to For the Love of Wisdom entries (my digital intro to philosophy text book)

  • members-only access to Sayings of the Sages, my digital commonplace book of wise sayings I’ve collected over my years of studying philosophy and culture

  • the full catalog of members-only essays + lecture videos

  • access to the members only chat

  • and lots more!

Okay, so look for the next companion essay on Book IV late tonight/early tomorrow and find the recording of session 1 down below the schedule.
