The Proverb Peddling Zine is (sort of) HERE!!
I started another zine, this one is a commonplace book of wise sayings/philosophy of wisdom zine
[Note to self: there were like 61 yes votes on the last poll but it was only 24 hours long. I didn't know the results would erase when I increased the poll duration]
I started another zine (personal magazine). My first one is a philosophical science fiction and fantasy zine comprised of my own short stories, poems, and SFF essays. It’s going really well! Thank you to everyone who’s ordered one of the first 25, pre-ordered from the next big printing, or who’s bought a digital copy. You guys are making my dream come true.
But with the success of Sages, Mages, & Wisdom Machines issue 1, I decided to turn some of my paid posts here on Parker’s Ponderings into a new zine called Proverb Peddling: Philosophy for Wisdom Lovers. I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time as well, so I’m just going to do it. I don’t know if it will be nearly as well received as SM&WM but it should be—it’s a really cool project, I promise.
I’ll have the initial physical copies whipped up soon, I’m thinking I’ll order 25 to 50 initial copies, based on interest, and sign those and send out stickers with them and then once I have pictures of those I can make another pre-order for the first big printing like I did with issue 1 of SM&WM. I fell into this policy but I really like it. This way I don’t have to over or under order. So definitely vote in the poll above to help me get a feel for how many I should have made up.
But the digital download version is ready right now for those who can’t wait or who prefer digital (or who live overseas and understandably can’t justify the shipping costs). You can grab the digital version of Proverb Peddling issue 1 here:
What’s it about?
Each issue will consist of at least the following four sections, but some issues may include more:
Proverb Peddling Scripts
Proverb Peddling is the name of a podcast I started but haven’t done much with yet. In the podcast, I share a wise saying that I’ve found, I analyze it, give some historical context for it, then help my audience apply it to their lives. I want to do way more of these episodes so I decided to write up the transcripts and share them with you in the new zine. I love the alliterative name too, so I chose to double dib and use it for my zine name too. In issue 1, I share the manuscript of episode 1 of the Proverb Peddling Podcast on Blaise Pascal’s Thinking Reed philosophical anthropology.
Wisdom Praxis Articles
Praxis is ‘doing’, practicing, as opposed to theorizing. My wisdom praxis articles are practical wisdom manuals—how to actually go out and be wise. In issue 1, I share two praxis articles from my Parker’s Ponderings Substack publication: How to Find Wisdom, and How to Make Your Own University Course for Self-Study.
Sayings of the Sages Commonplace Book
Sayings of the Sages is my printed commonplace book of wise sayings. I have a personal CPB of sententiae (wise sayings) that I call my Pocket Proverbs CPB, but I’ve recently been sharing it in installments here on Substack under my Sayings of the Sages section. So I decided to literally print it up in my new zine as well. In issue 1, I’ve included 2 of my Sayings of the Sages entries, which is something like 60 wise sayings. I’ll keep this going as well, it’s probably my favorite part of the zine.
Parker’s Apothegms
Parker’s Apothegms is a section of the zine where I share my own attempts at aphoristic philosophy—creating aphorisms. I explain a bit about what an aphorism is and I intend on continuing to add details on aphorisms, apothegms, and other kinds of sententiae in this section before I share my own in each issue. Issue 1 has 3.5 pages of my own aphorisms. I hope you enjoy them, and hopefully I get better at them as we go on.
If you like Parker’s Ponderings or ParkNotes, you’re going to love this new zine!
