What is Philosophy and How Do You Get Started?
My Top Picks for Someone Looking to Get Into Philosophy
One of the most frequent questions I get asked on my ParkNotes YouTube channel is something along the lines of “do you have any book recommendations for someone looking to get started in philosophy?”. I usually respond with some of my favorite philosophy books but I decided to finally make a video with 11 books that I think will serve the new student of philosophy well. They range from surveys of the history of philosophy, to source texts and even some modern, cutting-edge philosophy. I dropped a bonus theology and philosophy book for the theology nerds too. Watch the video here:
And if you want to read some more definitions of philosophy, then peep this post from my old blog: The Problem of Defining Philosophy
Thanks for your help with the book recommendations and motivations, also with the definitions of philosophy. I tend also tend to have a strong attachment to etymology so I think “philosophia” from the Greek “love of wisdom” also creates a strong motivation to learn philosophy in opposition to what current ideologies in modern society are doing, which is leading people to abandon thought and healthy discussion and dwell on stupidity and irrational or illogical behaviour. Thank you very much for your work, it really makes a difference.
Great video!!! I appreciate you putting on your list Huemer's Intro to Philosophy.
